About

Our Mission:
Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is a grassroots network of scientists working to build a more supportive, collaborative, and equal scientific community for all. WiSE strives to provide a platform for professional development and empowerment of women scientists at CSHL and beyond. Our initiative acknowledges and works to combat gender bias within our scientific community and in our broader local community on Long Island. We do so by providing women scientists with mentorship, career planning, networking, and educational opportunities, by educating the CSHL campus using data behind gender disparities in STEM, and by training the next generation of scientists through community outreach initiatives. Our History:
In the fall of 2015, the CSHL WiSE organization was created with the vision of doing our part to plug the leaky pipeline within the CSHL community. The founding goals of our organization have been threefold:

1. To promote long-term, institutional policy changes that would help support women on our campus through discussion with the CSHL administration
2. To provide STEM education to our surrounding community on Long Island; thereby inspiring the next generation of young women scientists
3. To provide professional development opportunities to women trainees on our campus, thus addressing the leaky pipelines that demonstrated a sharp drop off in the success of women in STEM during and following graduate school studies.

Since our founding in 2015, our group has developed an impressive history based on these goals. We have set a track record of approaching a solutions-based manner to the needs of women, and more broadly of all trainees, at CSHL. Our history consists of a series of examples that support our ability to foster positive change within our community.
